Phoka Hills produces some outstanding coffees and is located in the eastern part of Nyika National Park, Northern Malawi. Growers involved in this project are part of the Mzuzu Coffee Planters Cooperative Union with over 3000 small-holder member farmers, 25% of whom are women.
This particular micro-lot is sourced from female producers. The project aims to support these female producers by paying them directly. Traditionally, male family members will take control of all income generated through farming. Sadly earnings are often withheld from female family members restricting basic economic freedom and access to basic goods and services. Female farmer members from the Mlere zone in Mzuzu comment: 'just selling our coffee separately has transformed our position in the family. From begging for money from our husbands, we are now equal partners.'
