Aceh is well known for producing one of the most remarkable Sumatran coffees in the world. This lot of Aceh coffee is sourced by Aliong that run SariMakmur dry mills in Aceh; which consists of approximately 5,000 small farmers. Wet hulled “Giling Basah” is traditional coffee processing method only done in Sumatra.
As part of Corporate Social Responsibility, SariMakmur has been working with farmers’ education through this facility for proper crop management to increase production yield hence better welfare for farmers. The team also host regular meeting with collectors to ensure continuous education to farmers. This practice has proven to maintain and improve quality.
Unlike other origins, this Sumatra coffee parchment is hulled when the parchment is still wet resulting in the coffee is prone to bora bug insect bites. Although this process creates unique characters in Sumatra coffee, it also the main reason why it’s hard to source great and clean Sumatra coffee. Once it’s collected in Aceh, the coffee is then transported to Medan where the coffees are sorted with color sorter, gravity table and hand sorted, bagged and ready for export.
